Best UK Cities for a Family Weekend Away

A city break with children can be brilliant — if you choose the right destination. These UK cities punch above their weight for family-friendly things to do.

A city break with children is entirely possible — and often brilliant. Cities offer compact geography, excellent public transport, and a concentration of museums, parks, and activities that spread out rural attractions never can. Here are the UK cities that work best for families.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a spectacular city for families. The Royal Mile alone is a day out — street performers, the Castle at the top, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the bottom. Dynamic Earth is an excellent interactive science attraction, Arthur's Seat offers a genuine hill walk above the city, and the National Museum of Scotland is world-class and free. Accommodation is plentiful and the city is compact enough to navigate largely on foot.

Bristol

Bristol consistently ranks among the UK's most family-friendly cities. We The Curious (formerly At-Bristol) is one of the best science centres in the country, the SS Great Britain is a fascinating maritime museum, and the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Clifton Village make for a beautiful afternoon. The harbourside is excellent for walking and eating, and the street art in Stokes Croft makes the city feel genuinely vibrant.

Manchester

Manchester has transformed itself into one of the UK's best cities for families. The Museum of Science and Industry is free and absorbing, the Lowry at Salford Quays has excellent children's programming, and the National Football Museum in the city centre works brilliantly even for non-football families. The Trafford Centre is nearby for rainy day options, and the city has excellent transport connections.

York

York is almost perfectly designed for families. The Shambles, the city walls, the Minster, the Viking Centre (Jorvik), the National Railway Museum (free) — you could fill three days without running out of things to do. It's walkable, well-served with family-friendly restaurants, and the historic character of the city is genuinely engaging for children of all ages.

Cardiff

Cardiff is often overlooked but excellent for families. Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch are proper fairy-tale castles, the National Museum Cardiff is free, and Techniquest is one of the UK's best science centres. The city is compact, well-signposted, and has strong transport links. It's also notably good value compared to English cities of equivalent quality.

Bath

Bath works well for families with older children — the Roman Baths are genuinely impressive, the architecture is beautiful, and there are excellent museums and galleries. It can feel expensive and slightly crowded, but a weekend there is hard to beat for beauty. The surrounding countryside (Longleat, the Cotswolds) extends the trip nicely.

Tips for City Breaks with Children

  • Book accommodation centrally — you will walk more than you think
  • Use public transport where possible rather than driving into the centre
  • Mix museums with outdoor time — cities have excellent parks
  • Keep the itinerary loose — children rarely stick to plans
  • Check what's on — cities have events, performances, and markets that add texture to the visit
