Best Free Days Out with Kids in the UK

· 2 min read · By Stefania Bardan

You don't need to spend a fortune to give your kids a brilliant day out. Here are some of the best free family activities across the UK.

One of the best things about the UK is how much there is to do with children without spending a penny. From world-class museums to stunning coastal walks, free family days out are hiding in plain sight.

Free Museums and Galleries

The UK is home to some of the world's greatest free museums. London alone has the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the British Museum, and the V&A — all completely free to enter. Outside London, cities like Manchester (Museum of Science and Industry), Birmingham (Thinktank), and Edinburgh (National Museum of Scotland) offer equally impressive days out at no cost.

National Parks and Countryside

The UK has 15 National Parks covering over 10% of the country, all free to explore. The Peak District, Lake District, and Brecon Beacons are perfect for family walks, picnics, and wildlife spotting. Pack a OS Maps app, some snacks, and let the kids lead the way.

Beaches and Coastal Paths

The UK coastline stretches over 11,000 miles and most of it is free to access. Pembrokeshire in Wales, the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, and the Northumberland coast are among the most spectacular. Rock pooling, sandcastle building, and simply running along the beach never gets old.

City Parks and Playgrounds

Every major UK city has excellent free parks. Hyde Park, Regent's Park, and Hampstead Heath in London, Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow, and Roundhay Park in Leeds all offer fantastic outdoor spaces with playgrounds, ponds, and open fields.

Local Libraries and Community Events

Don't overlook your local library — many run free children's events, reading groups, and craft sessions, especially during school holidays. Check your council's website for what's on near you.

Tips for a Successful Free Day Out

  • Pack your own lunch and snacks — cafés at attractions charge a premium
  • Check opening times in advance, even for free attractions
  • Pre-book timed entry where required (many free museums now use this)
  • Go mid-week or early morning to avoid crowds
  • Download offline maps before you go if heading into the countryside
